What is a lottery syndicate, and how does one work?

A lottery syndicate is a group of people who put their money together to buy more lottery tickets than any of them would buy alone, and share whatever those tickets win. More lines in the draw means more chances for the group. The price of that is simple: every win is split between the members.

How a syndicate works

  1. Members pay in. Each person pays a stake for each draw, usually the same amount.
  2. The manager buys the tickets. One person, or a company, buys the lines and keeps the tickets safe.
  3. The draw happens. Every line is checked against the result.
  4. Wins are shared. Every prize, small or large, is divided between the members by their shares.

An example: ten people each put in the price of one EuroMillions line. The syndicate has ten lines in the draw instead of one. If a line wins £1,000, each member receives £100.

Does a syndicate improve your chances?

It increases the number of lines you have a share in, for the same money. Ten lines have ten times the chance of one line. It does not change the odds of any single line, and it does not increase what you can expect to win for each pound spent, because the prize is shared. What changes is how often the group sees a win. No one can promise a win, in a syndicate or out of one.

How to set up a lottery syndicate

  1. Pick a manager everyone trusts.
  2. Agree the lottery, the draws, the stake and how wins are shared.
  3. Write it down and have everyone sign. Our free lottery syndicate agreement form is ready to print.
  4. Collect the money before each draw, and share a photo of the tickets with the group.
  5. Keep a record of who paid for which draw.

The paperwork matters. The lottery operator pays a prize to the ticket holder, so a signed agreement is what shows the prize belongs to the group.

Private syndicates and managed syndicates

Private
Run by you with people you know. Free to run, but someone has to collect the money, buy the tickets, check the results and pay everyone out.
Managed
Run by a company. You buy a share online; the tickets are bought, checked and paid out for you. You pay a service charge on top of the ticket cost, and you share with members you do not know.

Live Lottos runs managed syndicates. Each one holds ten lines in every draw, divided into equal shares. We buy the official tickets, put the scan in your account before the draw, and split every win between the members. You can pause or leave at any time. How a Live Lottos syndicate works.

Common questions

What happens if a syndicate wins the lottery?

The manager claims the prize and pays each member their share. In a managed syndicate the shares are paid into each member's account automatically.

Are syndicate winnings taxed?

Lottery prizes are free of tax in the UK. In a private syndicate, a written agreement shows that each member received their own share of the prize.

Can you do a lottery syndicate online?

Yes. A managed syndicate is joined online, and you can see the lines and the ticket before the draw. You must be 18 or over.

Which lottery is best for a syndicate?

The big rollover games, such as EuroMillions, are the most popular because the jackpot is large enough to matter after it is shared. Lotto has better odds of a smaller jackpot.
